The 3D XXL giant letters have taken their place on the highest rooftop in France
THE VENUE
The observatory of the Tour Montparnasse Top of the City is one of the unmissable locations in the capital. Propelled to the 56th floor by the fastest lift in Europe, visitors discover a breathtaking 365° view of Paris. This space at 210 metres high is also a privileged venue for the organisation of events. Installations are made throughout the year to welcome, in the best conditions, visitors, tourists, businesses and individuals wishing to experience Paris from its most beautiful angle.

THE PROJECT
The events manager of the Tour Montparnasse de Paris is at the origin of the project. The objectives of installing the giant PARIS letters are multiple. The health crisis we are going through is disrupting tourist activities. According to figures provided by the Paris Tourist and Congress Office to the AFP, the number of tourists in Paris fell from 10.2 million in 2019 to 2.6 million in 2020. As the majority of Tour Montparnasse visitors are foreign visitors, the number of entries fell from 800,000 to below 100,000. It was therefore essential to strengthen the appeal of this space.
Our client’s needs were:
- Boost the appeal of the Rooftop,
- Dress the space,
- Develop communication on social media.
As you can imagine, nothing is left to chance when it comes to installing giant letters on the roof of the second tallest tower in Paris. We had to comply with the following requirements:
- Be able to bring the structure up to the rooftop, accessible on the last three levels by staircases only,
- Respect a maximum load of 500 kg/m² on the terrace,
- Withstand winds of up to 180 km/h,
- Be illuminated at night,
- Withstand extreme weather conditions,
- Be moveable,
- Withstand the load of several visitors climbing on the letters.
THE STUDY AND MANUFACTURE

Our team loves taking on new challenges! We developed a system of modular bases with individual letter slots. This allows us to bring each element and each letter up to the top of the Tower. The material chosen for manufacturing the letters is aluminium, for weight requirements. An epoxy paint is applied to the giant letters. The base is made of stainless steel to guarantee the stability of the whole structure. Our client wished to have lighting on the structure. An RGB LED lighting solution was therefore implemented. It allows different colours to be assigned to each individual letter, or a single uniform colour to be applied across all characters.
THE INSTALLATION
The most time-consuming part is transporting the entire structure to the roof of the Tour Montparnasse. The assembly itself is relatively quick. It was to our great surprise that the visitors of the day were already taking photos in front of this new installation while we had not yet fully finished assembling it.
